Do you experience back of head and neck pain? You are not the alone. More and more people report to the physiotherapist with head and back problems. That is not a good thing because neck pain can radiate to the trunk of the body, shoulders, arms, and back. This may hinder you in your daily activities and even disturb your night's rest. The complaints can even cause a neck hernia. And that can never be the intention. We are happy to help you with the pain in the neck and pain in the back of your head.

THE BACK OF HEAD AND NECK PAIN DOES NOT GO AWAY. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?
You will probably recognize it: A wrong move with the neck is made. The result is a small strain of the muscle, causing you to suffer from neck pain. Usually, that pain disappears after one or a few days. In other words: there is little going on.

But if your back of head and neck pain lasts longer and becomes more severe, we advise you to take these symptoms seriously.

Back of head and neck pain can be caused by:
  • a tension headache
  • a neck hernia
  • non-ergonomic, unhealthy work posture
  • inflammation of the neck muscles
  • stress
  • the too high tension of the muscles
THE PLACE OF THE NECK IN THE BODY
The neck is the upper part of the spine and consists of 7 vertebrae. The head is on the neck vertebrae. Between the vertebrae are intervertebral discs, also known as the cartilage rings.

The vertebrae consist of a vertebral body with a projection to the back and the side fixed thereto. Here are muscles attached. These muscles run to the head, the shoulder and the upper back.

In the middle - behind the vertebral body - is the spinal canal through which the nerves pass. Between the vertebrae, a twig of nerve leaves the spinal canal and this nerve provides the strength, the feeling and the perception of pain in an area. The nerves that branch from the neck are mainly connected to functions in the arm.

HOW DO I DEAL WITH MY BACK OF HEAD AND NECK PAIN?
Pain in the neck can be caused by a non-ergonomic working posture. Anyone who is sitting in a wrong position behind a desk every day may suffer from complaints. The complaints can manifest in the neck, but also find their cause in the shoulder blades, arms or back. If you want to deal with these complaints, it is important to make a diagnosis.
