What Are The Main Causes of Throat Cancer ?

causes-of-throat-cancer
Alcohol, cigarette and cigar smoke can damage the DNA of cells of the throat, causing these cells to become malignant and share unrestrained parts. Alcohol abuse and smoking (including cigars) are therefore important causes of throat cancer. In addition, poor oral hygiene (bad teeth brushing, non-flosses etc ...), exposure to asbestos, salt eating, infection with the virus that also causes Pfeiffer's disease and an unhealthy lifestyle risk factors of throat cancer. Finally, oral sex is a major cause of throat cancer. The Human Papilloma Virus, which also causes cervical cancer in women, can also cause throat cancer.

In the United States, oral sex is a major cause of throat cancer, then smoking. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) spread by unprotected oral sex now appears to be the main causes of throat cancer in people under 50 years, so warned scientists. A 2011 US study of 271 people showed that people with more than six sexual partners almost 9 times more risk of disease than others and those who triggered the virus were 32 times more likely to develop cancer.

Many varying sexual contacts and oral sex are risk factors for this type of throat cancer that occurs mainly in men. Survival of patients whose throat cancer is caused by HPV is better than in other throat cancer patients. These are the conclusions of doctor-researcher Michelle Rietbergen, who graduated from VUmc on 7 May 2014. She did research among patients from VUmc in the period 1990 to 2010.

Throat cancer due to HPV is different
There is growing evidence that throat cancer caused by HPV is different from throat cancer where the virus does not play a role. A study by Kian Ang cs in The New England Journal of Medicine shows that patients with squamous cell carcinoma in the throat can be divided into two categories:
  • HPV positives; and
  • HPV negatives.
More favorable forecast
In patients with an HPV positive tumor, the prognosis is more favorable. In comparison with HPV negative throat cancer patients, the risk of death within three years is 58 percent lower.
