A malignant tumor is scanned from the bladder via the urethra. This operation is called a TURT .

After the TURT you can get 1 of the following treatments:

  • Single-bladder flushing immediately after the TURT with cytostatics. These are drugs that kill cells or inhibit cell division
  • A series of bladder swabs with cystostasis
  • A series of bladder washings with BCG. This is a medicine that stimulates a response to cancer cells.

These bladder swings are given to reduce the risk of tumor recurrence and reduce the risk of tumor growth.

In addition to the above treatments, you can sometimes participate in research trials ( trials ). For example, you will receive a new treatment or combination of treatments where doctors are doing research. With this medical scientific research, doctors or a new treatment test is better than standard treatment.

Treatment plan for bladder cancer

In determining the treatment plan, several specialists are involved. They use commonly agreed national guidelines. Doctors prescribe a particular treatment based on:

  • The type of bladder cancer: a non-muscle invasive growing or a muscle-invasive tumor.
  • The degree of malignancy of the tumor. This is called the rating. The tumor may be high grade or low grade. High-grade tumors are more malignant and grow faster.
  • The presence of sowing (not applicable to non-muscle infarction bladder cancer)
  • Your general physical condition
  • Your personal wish

Multidisciplinary consultation

Your doctor will discuss your medical history with a team of specialist doctors and nurses. This is called multidisciplinary consultation (MDO). In many hospitals in the Netherlands, doctors also involve specialists from other hospitals in multidisciplinary consultation.

Discuss treatment proposal

After the multidisciplinary consultation, the doctor will discuss a treatment proposal with you. During this conversation you can also discuss your wishes and expectations. In some situations your doctor will give you a choice. Each and every decision has pros and cons. Discuss with your doctor. With your questions, you can also contact a (specialized) nurse.
